A Fable Story
October 29, 2006Animal Farm is a pretty easy read. The chapters are short, and once you begin to sympathize with some of the animals, the plot carries you along rather swiftly. Let’s go back for a minute to the title page and Orwell’s insistence on including “A Fable Story” beneath the Animal Farm title. Do you think the book can be read for plot alone? Does it matter if a reader links the events of the plot to Communist Russia under the rule of Stalin? Can the book be appreciated simply as a fable story? Why or why not? Defend your answer.
Stalin, Marxism, Communism–Question #3
October 25, 2006This question requires a little research on your part. Find three facts about one of the above topics
1. Post your three facts
2. You may not post a fact someone else has already posted
3. Respond to at least one fact posted by another and explain how that fact ties into the novel
Animal Farm Mega Challenge (60pt) Discussion–Question #2
October 21, 2006Great start, guys. Now click on this link to read two short texts on the issue of socialist theory.
The first is a short explanation of the term “socialism.” It claims that all forms of socialism are critical of personal property and favor a more equal distribution of wealth. The second is a modern take on socialism which was written and originally published in 1999. This spin on socialism is named “Bill of Rights Socialism.” The author states that not only are the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer (as most socialist theories point out), but that technological advances are speeding up this process. Nearly eight years have passed since the publication of this article; therefore, do you see that the article predicted accurately or do you feel it elicited unwarranted fears? What do you think about the article’s title?
Animal Farm Mega Challenge (60pts) Discussion
October 19, 2006Choices! One of the best things you can do in life is create options for yourself. It is the reason CSS is so special. As a college preparatory school, CSS is providing you opportunities to place yourselves in the best possible positions to not only be admitted to college–but invited, recruited, scouted. The more universities knocking on your door, the better the opportunities to choose schools that will offer competitive programs you hope to specialize in. Why is this important? So you can then place yourselves in the most competitive position to get the job of your dreams. And as the saying goes, “Find a job you love–never work a day in your life.”
Having said that, welcome to the Mega Challenge Discussion. Remember that you are choosing to participate in a high level discussion–the expectations, therefore, are high. Just as in life, sometimes the high paying jobs offer us the best opportunities for the goals we have set for ourselves. For me, teaching (a not-so-high paying job) offers me more rewards. If you are choosing to participate in this assignment because of the points alone, you may want to look at the other options. Choose the option that makes sense to you individually–do you need extra points? Do you have the time to devote to a higher point option? Is it a choice you think you will enjoy?
Today’s discussion question is this: What do you know about Communism? What do you know about Socialism? How do you feel about these topics? Please DO NOT research these questions! I want to begin this discussion with an authentic evaluation of the background theme. Have fun!
