Innocence, we all had it at one time, some of us still do. In the lord of the flies the kids lost this innocence due to multiple things. The kids in lord of the flies lost there innocence due to being isolated, survival, and the thought of no authority.
this i what i will probibly use 4 my subject.

Matt,
I do not totally agree with your statement. The boys are lacking maturity and not innocence. I thought that the littleuns were the only ones of the boys that have innocence, and the only main charachter that I see being innocent is Piggy. Piggy’s innocence shows when he immediately tells Ralph that his nickname is Piggy, but he doesn’t want anyone else to know that except him. Piggy shares this information, trusting that Ralph will keep his secret. Poor, foolish, innocent Piggy!!!!

“ Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in.” In writing Lord of the Flies, William Golding’s purpose was not to show that the children’s innocence was taken away by their experience on the island, but to show that the children came to the island with many destructive traits which only grew more visible through the hardships of their survival. From the beginning of the book, the reader gets a glimpse of the true nature of the characters. By the middle, the evil qualities are starting to be show much more than the good ones, and by the end of the book, the children’s destructive traits have overpowered them. (I might add something to this sentence when I know more because I have not finished the book yet!)

Survival is 90% mental 10% instinct. Having a good mental attitude is the key to survival. Having a good mental attitude allows us to think and allows positive instincts to help us survive rather than negative ones.

In the beginning novel The Lord of the Flies, the author, Andrew Golden, really emphasizes the child-like innocence of the boys on the island. It seems from time to time the writing appears to be mixed between innocence, and maturity, making it difficult to read. One of the various ways the writer establishes this innocence is by making the boys naked in various parts during the beginning of the story. This sort of tells the reader that these boys and still very young and immature, which is vital for the rest of the book to make sense. As you are reading the story, you can nearly see the boys maturing to where they no longer walk around naked, but have enough common sense to wear clothing. The author very vividly describes this because he wants to establish the boundry’s between childhood and mature, semi-adulthood.

Whoops that Andrew Golden bit is supposed to be Willian Golding^^

The kids in Lord of the Fly’s must live under some pretty hard things. Ralph the leader he set things up good because he made Jack the leader of the hunting groups. When the hunters are out hunting then Ralph came get the rest of the people to help him set up the camp and make what they need. Some survival skills that are needed are that the people have the food to keep them alive. Also they will need a shelter to keep them warm and covered. The last thing that they would need is some type of warmth and a way to cook their food (a fire).

When you are stuck on an island what do you do? You don’t sit on the beach starving yourself. You might just start a new way of living and dealing with your surroundings. Think of some ways to help with your situation. You might want to find food and water. Possibly you could make a shelter out of sticks and other raw materials. To finish off what you need to stay alive you could make a fire.

Will all the boys survive. It all depends on there attitude. If they have a good mental mindset they can live. So will all the boys survive i dont know but the strong will i think.
January 17, 2007 at 4:51 pm
When stranded on an isolated island with just young kids by your side what will you do? It will take mental toughness and extra effort to conquer your goals. So only the strong will survive.
January 17, 2007 at 5:09 pm
This is my intro paragraph on basic survival necessities.
There are defiantly things you need to get to stay alive in any emergency. In the book Lord of the Flies the boys who are stranded have a very skewed view on what the priorities are to stay alive for as long as possible. They also are very lazy which does not help with getting things done. The basic necessities for staying alive are food and water, a shelter, and a fire. Without these three things you are not going to survive, so listen up. End intro paragraph.

I reciaved permission from Ms. Gutierrez to do a different view of the novel, through leadership styles and roles the different boys played throughout the novel.
Leadership is presented everywhere. Today, there are many leaders, from government leaders to family members. Every leader plays an important role in society, by keeping it running as smoothly as possible. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, leadership roles are very apparent, and incredibly important. With out the amazing leadership of some of the boys on the island, survival would have been much harder to achieve.
January 17, 2007 at 5:52 pm
When the need for dominance is introduced, innocence is forgotten. William Golding, the author of “Lord of the Flies”, implies the theme of innocence very plainly with the childrens child-like behavior with the strong context clues. He uses their nakedness and youthful expressions to show this. In order to survive they must learn to cooperate with other people with different ideas in addition to making the right decisions. While doing this the children’s inner viciousness is unleashed.
January 17, 2007 at 6:02 pm
Fires, search of food, and a cheif. Thats just a few things it takes to survive on a deserted island right? It takes strength, belife, and courage to strive to survive in the wild. In Lord of the Flies, the boys manage to survive with no parental supervision. How would they of passed the trates of survival?
January 17, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Bye the way, Davis your topic is very eye catching and has a very intresting attention grabber! keep the good work up!

In Lord of the Flies, Golding shows a nature of life that impresses upon the reader importance so vividly, yet is left for mere children. One would never in society accuse a child of despicable crimes, no more than a possible cookie missing from the jar. These kids are thrust into a world unknown to them. Order is thrown askew, and all they’ve ever known is questioned. Kids are often even portrayed as innocence itself, and innocent they are. Innocence is not the only manifestation in human lives though, and no one is pure. Golding uses children to show innocence in the beginning. But as time passes on the island insanity creeps in, insecureness takes hold, and the doubt lays over like a haze. Through small and major actions, Golding shows a shift in the nature of things. Whether through portraying the look of the island or describing their actions, Golding shows a shift in the alignment of their nature. Carefree boys turn into bloodthirsty hunters. He shows that corruption is everywhere, even if it takes the worst to see it.
I hope this is good I’ll have to read the rest of the book though to make sure.
January 17, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Innocence, lack of knowledge or understanding. The characters of Lord of the Flies start out compltely innocent in everything they do, but they slowly lose that innocence as they stay on the island more. The people start out happy and free-spirited, but later on, they start to realize their predicament. Also, at the beginning, they’re not only innocent, but slightly ignorant. They lose their innocence later on, which gets rid of the excuse that they can do it. The loss of innocence.
January 17, 2007 at 7:00 pm
The characters in Lord of the Flies show a blatant disregard for social norms and instead express carelessness for their actions. This is probably due to the absence of adults who would have kept them under control. When put in situations like the one in Lord of the Flies, people are much more likly to ignore things (such as societal norms) that they would normally pay alot of attention to in society. There are many examples of this behavior in William Golding’s novel, demonstrated by his characters.
January 17, 2007 at 7:03 pm
Did you ever notice that the innocence that is lost in the book, The Lord of the Flies? The boys are innocent in some parts, but they lose it quickly. Some parts include a boy kicking over sand castles, another boy killing a pig, and another throwing rocks. These things led to the downfall of the boys innocence.
January 17, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Survival
Mr. Golding author of the mediocre book Lord of the Flies needs to get his priorities for the book straightened out. Mr. Golding took a great concept survival on an uninhabited island and twisted it full of metaphors and stuff like that. No either Mr. Golding gets should write a story of survival putting the characters in realistic situations that they might face on an island of this sort. Instead the author tries to go halfway in both directions attempting to write book on the lose of innocence or a survival story. Both ways just don’t work.

“Human instincts are hard-wired programming.” This quote by William Rotsler indicates the importance of the decisions and tendancies humans posess. This is a blatant occurance in Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding. The instincts of human beings differs when they are removed from the boundries of society and placed in a setting where primordial instincts must exist. Lord of the Flies uses this theme and depicts the contrast between morality and brutality, self glory and leadership, as well as reason and barbarity.

Young people face important decisions every day of their lives. But what if those decisions influenced whether they lived or died. How would their personalities influence those decisions and how would their personalities be changed in the process? The boys of Lord of the Flies all possess child-like innocence until they become stranded on an island. They then must face their fears, set aside their weaknesses and bring out their strengths. Through tragedy and peril the inner strengths of each boy comes out and they quickly become men in their need to survive.

When a group of boys stranded on a deserted island get to gether there bounds to be a fight! When the plane crashed on the island and the group got to gether to decide a few things there was already some tension between Jack and Ralph. Both Jack and Ralph wanted the passion of leader but only one won. When Ralph was voted team leader you could already sense Jacks passion to be leader. As time grew Jacks jealousy of Ralph became more and more noticeable.
January 17, 2007 at 8:26 pm
sorry on the fourth line that passion is not supposed to be there. And on the second line the sentence is supposed to be this: When a plane crashed on the island, the young boys in the choir got to gether to sort out a few things but hne doing so you could a;ready feel some tenssion.
Still ned to fix a few minor things
January 17, 2007 at 8:28 pm
The instinct to survive in the characters of Lord Of The Flies over rides all other traits of the children’s personalities. As the story unfolds Golding illustrates that unacceptable behavior can be tollerated in order to survive. Golding points out that societal norms are pushed aside, when the goal is to survive.
January 17, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Stranded young boys on an island, will they lose their innocence? Even though the author shows their (even the older boys’)innocence at the beginning they start to lose their innocence. The older boys have to take charge so that they can survive, they make a lot of rules that the younger boys have to follow, and they don’t know how long they will be stuck on the island.
January 17, 2007 at 9:10 pm
The oldest one is always first. Parents and teachers tell the students and learners right from wrong. The youngest can’t understand the responsibilty it takes to lead a group, they don’t understand. However if you are among a group of children who are all innocent and not fully matured enough to be considered an adult, do the same qualities apply? Why would Jack or Ralph from Lord of the Flies be considered more worthy leaders? Do they understand the power they gain and the situation around them? Do children see it as a danger that they are parent-less and alone to survive? Or do will they suffer? A child’s impersionation of an adult does identify with the situation they are given. They can mature faster than other children but without a need to mature they can only remain innocent for so long.
Sorry, it’s kind of meh. I think it belongs in child behavior or survival. Another question, do we have to do research from just the Lord of the Flies book or will we have to use other resources too?
January 17, 2007 at 9:12 pm
There are many instances in Lord of the Flies that show different elements of survival. If the characters in Lord of the Flies did not use elements of survival, than they would have chaos and live like primitive tribes. The children use leadership, hunting, and protection elements to survive. There are only a few elements of survival but they are very important. Some of these things include water, shelter, and food.
January 17, 2007 at 9:16 pm
In Lord of the Flies the kids are trying to survive on an island together and they resort to democracy and have a leader. The kids seem to be doing pretty well and you need to have good instincts to survive on and island. They are mysterious about some one wierd being on the island but they seem to stay calm
January 17, 2007 at 9:23 pm
What is innocence? (Attention grabber) In the book Lord of the Flies innocence is established from the beginning of the book when Ralph and Piggy swim naked in a pool of water. But throughout the book innocence is lost.(thesis) There are many symbols that tell the reader that innocence is being lost. Here are some examples of how innocence is lost in the book.(essay map)
Please give me feed back for my intro paragraph. I would like to Know if my thesis is good enough to write a paper on and if my essay map is a good one. Thanks!

What happens when a crash leaves you homeless on an island with a whole bunch of kids? Would you try to survive, or leave it to others? In the book Lord of the Flies, a plane crash leaves a whole bunch of boys stuck on an island. Instincts and the need for survival takes over, and Ralph and Jack take charge. They find they need to hunt, shelter themselves, and find a way to get off the island. All of the boys will have to mature much to succeed in surviving the mysterious island.
January 17, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Right at the start of Lord of the Flies, we learn that a plane crash has resulted in a group of boys being stranded on an island. They have no adults with them and only a slight sense of what they need to do to survive and what they can do to get rescued. The boys show times when they are trying quite hard to act mature to keep things running smoothly, but more often than not, the boys childish and irresponsible behavior comes through. This behavior makes it difficult for the boys to get along and work together effectivly. There are many examples of this behavior, such as the boys throwing sand and rocks at one another,Ralph and Jack’s tension for who should be leader, and the killing of the pig. These are just a few of the examples and themes of the childish and irrisponsable behavior in Lord of the Flies that I will be mention in my essay.
January 17, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Maturity is a key part to surviving a situation like what the kids had, if the children on the island had been more mature, less innocent, and older, they might have possibly survived. A mature person is one who is does not think only in absolutes, who is able to be objective even when deeply stirred emotionally. The leaders arent there yet ,gurantee the best chances at surviving, and when the people who are the leaders don’t know how, it makes it hard to survive. When Jack was too busy trying to hunt the pig, he forgot about his responsibility of keeping the fire and keeping hope of finding civilization alive, because he wasnt mature enough to handle Ralph’s comments.
January 17, 2007 at 9:52 pm
“We saw- Squealing- It broke away- Before I could kiil it-but-next time” (Golding 33). In the Lord of the Flies, their survival depends on their group and individual instincts, and it depends on their mental state. Ralph seems to be a good leader, and Jack is a good hunter. Naturally the kids want to get meat, but Ralph tells them that they can’t survive forever and they need to get themselves rescued using a fire.
January 17, 2007 at 10:01 pm
In Lord of the Flies a group of boys have been plain wrecked and have to rely on their survival instincts. Even though they are only a group of kids with no atomatic leader (adults) they have enogh commen sense to group together and make the nessesary deccisions to survive. They elected a leader and follow his decisions. The boys made shelters and hunted for food without any adults to guid them and teach them how.
January 17, 2007 at 10:05 pm
The childish and irresponcible behiviors demonstrated in the boys actions are to be expected. Their plane has just gone down and now they are on an uninhabited island with no adults. There are no adults to tell them “no” there are no adults to tell them to do this, to do that; they make nessesary decisions for their suvival. The different emocians that take over the boys are sometimes presented in their actions, and by rational decisions.
January 17, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Innocence is a hard thing to describe. Some people use innocence as an excuse for some of the wrong things they have done in their life. There are also many people who think that using it as an excuse is an ok thing to do but it really isn’t . Mostly only children have innocence, but even some adults still have it.
January 18, 2007 at 4:12 pm
William Golding implies innocence in the characters of Lord of the Flies by making them careless. When the kids arrived on the island, there were no rules. They simply didn’t care about rules. They thought, “as long as we survive, we are okay.” Then there was a big change in thoughts when they didn’t know what to do next. That’s when their innocence started to fade.

Survival is a topic we are no usually faced with in modern society. We
have developed technology and luxuries that make survival a thing of the past.
But when faced with a situation, survival becomes an inner drive. The ability to
survive is an internal reaction. Adrenaline, reflexes, and body function shut
down all protect #1, you.
A few comments, now.
Wendy: Great layout! It’s subtle, but nice. Good luck with your topic.
Nels: It may be hard to prove that point, but if you define your thesis statement a bit more, it will be easier to use. Also, I really hope you get better soon. I’ll paint a bucket for you if you don’t come tommorrow (service learning):)

The boys in Lord of the Fly’s must live under some pretty harsh conditions. Ralph, the leader he set things up good for himself because he made Jack the leader of the hunting groups. When the hunters are out hunting then Ralph can get the rest of the people to help him set up the camp and make what they need on the beach to survive. Some survival skills that are needed are, that the people have the food to keep them alive. Also they will need a shelter to keep them warm and covered. An important thing to remember is to have someone in charge of delegating the chores. The last thing to remember is a way to keep warm and a way to cook their food (a fire).
The survival, and hunt for food can be risky but if you want to survive like these boys, they are set up good for this, because they spilt up in two groups so they are able to protect themselves and still have liquid to stay hydrated and enough food to stave of hunger. These boys had to make weapons like spears and sharp things to be able to kill and stab through a pig’s thick hide. The risks of surrounding a pig with big razor sharp teeth are high but to track this animal and kill it will fill you with taste and a good fulfilling meal. And then the sharpened spears can be used to hang the meat or put it on the spit. Also you could do what they did and cut off the head and place it on top of a stick as a trophy. Do not let the meat sit out to long or eat it raw because the person eating it could get very sick.
P.S Mrs. G we cant get to the wiki

I MADE A MEW INTRO!
Whoa, stuck on an island what to do. Maybe sit and wait. No, got a new idea take an adventureto see what a survivor would need. Ah-ha need food and water to survive on an un-known island. Maybe make a shelter out of wood. the last thing to survive….. got it need a fire to stay warm and to have a signal for planes above.
January 19, 2007 at 8:16 pm
COULD NOT GET INTO THE WIKI SO THE SECOND PARAGRAPH IS BELOW!
What types of food can be found on an island? How about meat woulden’t that be nice on an un-known island. Maybe take a roll like Jacks and find a pig or another native animal. To find water trust the instinks and follow the insects. Make sure not to just drink the water from the ocean. Take a peace of clothing and let the water run through it so the water has less bacteria.
