Yes my impression on poetry has changed since e have started this unit. Before I always thought that poetry should rhyme. Now seeing and hearing all the examples shows me that now all poetry has to rhyme. How ever, I never saw the resemblence between song lyrics and poetry. I always thought that they were two different thing and never thought that lyrics could be poetry.I do feel like there is now a deeper appreciation for the earlier artists now that I actually read the lyrics to those important songs. I see now that that song writers and singers did play a big part in the progression we have made. This unit has been very good and I think it is a good topic to cover.

My impression on poetry has changed since we began this unit by making me realize that poetry isn’t really just someone writing down a bunch of words that rhyme. I learned that it is a lot deeper and that poets really put a lot of thought into their poems. I also learned that poems can be thought of in many different ways and that they have a strong message and can be very touching. I do feel that I have a greater appreciation for significance that musical arts have played in our history because I used to not even think about that even really being a part of history. I just thought it was just there and that no one really paid attention to it. I was wrong. Very many people paid attention to it and now I learned to really watch for that too. I think that there is a very strong similarity between music and poetry. I think so because when writing both, they you really put a lot of thought into and they are both very touching and most are very interesting to read because of the way the author captures the reader even if it’s just for a short amount of time. This unit has made me think a lot more about how the people felt that were part of the first people to write poetry in that way and how they faced all of the people who were against them and how writing poetry helped them overcome it all. This made me think about how people now still write poetry to overcome problems and many just write it for fun or because it is a passion of theirs.

My impression is changed since we began this unit, because before this unit Ididn’t know about rhyme of the word but i know that each word has the rhyme. I feel like i have more depper appreciation for the significance musical artists have played in our history because i can understand history and what people feel about that. This unit encouraged encouraged you to learn more about the role music and/or poetry has played in American history this helpe me that understand the hisotry and like feeling of the people. The strong similarity between music and poetry is they make it short and show their feeling.

My impression has changed because I have learned things about poetry that I didn’t know like that it can be put into a song. I always thought of song lyrics and poetry as two totally different things but now I can see that you can take one and make it into the other. I do feel a deeper appreciation for those artists that have played a part in our history. I did not realize what an impact they had on everything other than our own entertainment. This unit has encouraged me to learn more about what this impact was and still is and also to find a deeper meaning to the lyrics in the songs that we hear today.

My impression of poetry has changed because I always thought that it was supposed to rhyme, but I found out that poems do have meanings and that they don’t have to rhyme at all. The part that surprised me the most was that most music is really poetry with a beat to it. I never took the time to look at music lyrics and notice that it is poetry. So my impression on poetry used to be that it was just fun rhyming words, but now it is that poetry has a meaning to it, it doesn’t have to rhyme, and that it is actually popular because it is used in most of the music around us.
I have also learned that the history of poetry shows that people were sending society messages through their poetry. When I heard that we were going to learn about its history, I thought we were going to learn about the person who started it, that way he/she could entertain the people around him/her in a new but fun way. I then found out that they were trying to send the people indirect messages that needed to be sent while entertaining the people. In other words, I learned that the poetry writers in the past were really everyday artists opening the people’s eyes to what was happening in their world that need to be fixed.

My impression has changed a lot because before this unit i didn’t like the poetry. But after this unit, i intersted in poetry. I also can compare the american poetry and korean poetry. At the first time of this unit, i was little bit confused about the american poetry, because american poetry was really different with the poetry which i knew. It was like new type of poetry to me. I really enjoyed this unit!

Through this unit I have acquired a greater understanding of poetry and a greater appreciation for the poets, because now I understand how difficult writing poetry can be. Also now it is easier for me to find the deeper meaning of the poetry than before. I think there is a strong similarity between most music and poetry because songs are simply poems that are being sung.
February 11, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I have finally learned to respect and appreciate poetry. It is intersting, and a skill great skill that some people have. I did not know that most poetry doesn’t rhyme, and theres more meaning to the individual word. It gives you a good mind image of what is happening in the poem.

At the start of this unit I thought that poetry was just a piontless subject that for some reason people liked. In this unit I’ve learned how you can get any messege you want out of peotry or music. I aslo thought that this was going to be an easy unit, and I also thought that poetry was not worth going over, I actually enjoy this unit alot though. This unit hasn’t encouraged me to want to learn about American History in music, but it makes me want to listen to the unit even more.
February 11, 2008 at 10:59 pm
my idea of poetry has changed a lot science the beginig of the unit. Before the unit started I thought that poetry was gust a bunch of ryming wor put together. Now I understand that poetry is much more exciting and a lot more fun then I thought.
February 12, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I never realy got into poetry till this unit and now i think about it alot. i enjoyed discovring that there is more meaning to the music i listen to than i thought there was. It realy opened me up to some artist who would have stayed anonymous to me. And i have realy had a fun time working on my own poem/rap.
February 12, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I think that poetry and music are very similar and the only difference that I can see between them is that music has a different sound in the backround. My personal veiw on poetry has remained the same; although, I never had realized how many political poems and songs there are because they are so rarly played on the radio.
February 12, 2008 at 3:56 pm
My thoughts on poetry have been moved by this unit. Previously I believed that poetry was just someone talking in a bland tone and fancy words that required deep thinking to understand. Now I know poetry can be rather simple and as a rap or a song. But now I have trouble finding the difference between a poet and a musician. I still do not consider poetry to be a hobby of mine, but I do have a deeper understanding of it.
February 12, 2008 at 3:57 pm
My impression of poetry has changed because i thought that it was just a bunch of (some times) big words and other types of words put together to make a poem and they had to rime. Now i think that its a way for poets to express them selves. I think that my appreciation for the way artists and the way that they come up with there music has changed.
February 12, 2008 at 4:05 pm
yes i do believe that this unit has changed the way i view American history. i really didn’t know that being rebellious and the issue of segregation had anything to do with the fact of music. the music and poetry we have been reading and listening to has given me a new point of view and a and a better prespective on the 50’s and the beat era.
February 12, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Although I still don’t enjoy poetry as much as some people, I have a higher appretiation for those that write poems and for poetry itself. I never truly realized how much work went into it. Before the unit I thought that poetry was a mindless few sentences. But now tha† I’ve been put in the position to write poetry, I realize how much every word counts and how hard it is to put everything you need to say in one poem. I now have a deep respect for those that can do it!

Yes after this unit, my impression of poetry has changed. After hearing some poems that I am not very fond of and some that I love, I realize that poetry is like expressing thoughts and sending messages through writing form. Yes I do feel a greater appreciation for the musical history. I have never realized how much music has impacted our society and that it can make such a difference and touch people in so many different ways. Yes I do think that there is a similarity between poetry and music. Poetry doesn’t always have to rhyme and neither does music. Music is just poetry with tone and notes that can send out just as strong of a signal and just as loud as a message like poetry. This unit has encouraged me to keep learning about musical history and what it can do for us maybe in the future. The difference between music back in the day and modern music, is totally different in the sense of the sexuality that is in todays music and in old music it is mostly just simply about love.

Only have I had some change of thought torwards poetry. I had already known that poetry could express big issues and raw feelings of a world that has or is currently changing however I was’nt so informed on the “It does’nt have to rhym thing”. My appreciation for artists has grown somewhat. The reason for this is that I hadn’t noticed how well an artist could get a message to the public. Music has also grabbed our attention since music is a culture in which the world is binded. Poetry and music can be related depending on the creater’s choice. When writing something expressive, we can mold a poem or song into an oppinion, a message, or just a current feeling. When writing, the writer has complete power. The unit has not inspired me to learn about music and poetry however poetry and music has motivated me to learn about its roots, purpose, and growth.
February 12, 2008 at 6:38 pm
My impression of poetry hasn’t really changed since we began this unit because poetry is such a big part of my life. I feel that I do have a deeper appreciation for the significance of musicians in our history because when I hear a song, and really listen to the lyrics, it gets across a message that is really meaningful and informative. There is a very strong similarity between poetry and music because without one, the other wouldn’t exist. Because without poetry, there wouldn’t be any music with vocals, and without music, there would be no songs, and no inspiration for poets. The unit has also encouraged me to learn more because I want to know what people have been through, and not just from the eyes of corporate Amercia.

I have to admit, I hated poetry when we started and the further and further we’ve come, the more and more I’m starting to enjoy it. Although I take a lot longer to write poetry than most others, I’m started to get the hang of it. I’ve noticed that poetry and songs are very closely related. I never wrote songs or poetry before and; frankly, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. But now, I can pretty much write any poem about whatever as long as I have a little time. I did learn a lot about the African Americans during the beat era and how they were treated like a trash can, always given the blame for whatever happened that was bad for the economy and such and that they couldn’t get their music out to the public because of their race. I do have a lot more respect for poetry and like Michael said, There’s a lot more repsect for poetry.

My impression about poetry at first was not to wonderful. I always have seen poetry as hard to understand and frustrating to write but once we started to get into it more I started to see that poetry was more then a jumble of words and poetry is very symolized and many time had many diffrent meanings. The one thing that is hard for me to understand is the diffrence between music and a poem. They have a diffrent sound in the backround but they both seem so similar to me and in a way i think a song is kind of like a poetry of its own. Now the poetry I see are taken in and I see them in a diffrent way. Each word has to be taken in and the poet must work very hard and I never realized how much work and perspective it took for a poet to write a poem. To me before they seemed like a bunch of words thrown together but now taking them time to look at th epoetry I see the greatness of it and the meaning. The poets must have to find there words and they way they use them from some thing from their past because some things they right are just amazing and I can see all their greatness.I really understand some poems and can relate to them which makes them poem even more amzing to me. Reading each poem is like a master peace in its own way. I still might not like to write poetry but reading it is very intresting to me because of all the word choices and just what the poem stands for in general. Hopefully some day I could create something like some of these great poets out there have.

befor this unit I thought that poetry and music were diffrent. when I found out poetry is found in like every rap song, well almost every song. When listening to all the songs was like a history class, I learned so much on how they used to live. I think poetry and music are mainly the same. this music has encourged me so much, when I listen to music I relize what most of the songs were really saying.
February 12, 2008 at 7:10 pm
No, my impression has not changed because i love poetry and everything about it so i am use to reading it and learning about it. Although my education on the topic has increased. I can enjoy music that much more now because of all this new knowledge. I find there are many similarities in music and poetry because of all the artist we have learned about that could be considered poets or musicians. I would have to agree with Michael that the beat era has given me a new interest in that era. Yet unlike him I enjoy poetry .
February 12, 2008 at 7:15 pm
no i dont think my impression of poetry has changed, its still realy awsome and beautiful, i only think its made me think more about the 60’s and 70’s and stuff because i realy didnt know what it was like back then. yes i would say i have a better deeper appreciation for the significance musical artists have played in our history because, there songs have meaning unlike the songs we have to day and they help tell about the hardships that went on and things. well yes i find a strong similarity between poetry and music poetry is like a song with no music but they can both be used to express ones fellings.
February 12, 2008 at 8:24 pm
yes, my impression of poetry has changed becuase i thought it was’nt very interesting but now that i know its very similar to music i have a different idea to it
Do you feel you have a deeper appreciation for the significance musical artists have played in our history? Why or why not?
yes, because most of them have made a big difference
yes , i find a strong similarity between poetry and music because you can be mistaken bettween the both
Has this unit encouraged you to learn more about the role
music and/or poetry has played in American history?
not really, just cause, i feel the same way about both
February 12, 2008 at 8:27 pm
My impression on poetry has changed a little bit, but not by much. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate it, I just always have anyway. My impression on the different types of poetry and the different motives has changed and the messages of each are more clear to me. I think it changed because we listened to such different examples and we talked about them in depth. I definitely feel a deeper appreciation for musical artists in our history. I think in all the nonsense musicians play today that seems purely entertainment oriented we forget that music used to (and still does to some extent) have a purpose and a cause. The thought that the beat generation was trying to get out a message and Tupac was trying to get out a message is very inspiring. Although I found this unit interesting and I would love to learn more about it in class, but in all honesty I can’t see myself going out and studying the roles music and poetry have played in our history. Thank you Mrs. G for having this unit, I really enjoyed it!

my impression hasn’t changed i still think about it the same, butive thought about it more and now im more inspired to write
February 12, 2008 at 9:29 pm
My impression of poetry has changed because I think I’m actually understanding it now. Before all I thought poetry was some words that rymed and had no meaning whatsoever. Poetry has made me think more about the past and how hard life was yesterday and how easy we have life today. I think there is a strong similarity between music and poetry because many song writers have to find the perfect words to get their point arcoss and the same is true with poets. I have wanted to learn more about America’s past and learn what hard ships people had to face.

My view of poetry has not changed at all since this unit began, though my view of my own capability to write it has dramatically. I used to be able to at least manage to write a couple of paragraphs and call it poetry. Now I cant even manage to write more than a sentence! Today I stared at a blank screen for 45 minutes and did not think of more than two sentences. I’m absolutly hopeless. I do however feel a deeper appreciation for musical artists in our past considering all that they did for civil rights.
I think that there are many similarities between music and poetry they both often have the same rythm, are both pleasing,…… and i cant write either. This unit has inspired me to look deeper into the affect that music has had on our past.
