Use this space to discuss pages 57-63. In particular, pay attention to the following: 1) What Teiresias’s claims to have as a champion against Oedipus 2) The people Oedipus suspects are plotting against him and 3) the irony associated with symbolic and physical blindness on the part of the characters we’ve encountered thus far.

I’m confused on who oedipus thinks is plotting against him, Creon, Teiresias, or both? I think that Oedipus has some physical blindness. I’m not quite sure of the symbolic blindness though! Help!

Isnt odepus the king and creon and him were like accomplises, or at least isnt that what that what teiresias thought. And isnt Teiresias the blind person who says he can see special things and is accusing Odepus and Creaon for killing the past king? And I dont understand the symbolic blindness either. And who does odepus think that are plotting against him? Isnt that just Teiresias because he wants to be king?

I’m thinking the “Truth” was Teiresias’s champion against Oedipus however I am confident that the symbolic blidness stands for Oedipus’s pride clouding his good judgement and logical reasoning. The answer to who Oedipus thinks is plotting against him is kinda shakey also. I beleive that when Teiresias points out that Oedipus is the cause of the disaster, Oedipus becomes flustered and so he says Creon and Teiresias (or maybe Chorus and not Teiresias?) are the problems. He does this to protect his pride and title of King. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I thought that Teiresias thought that creon and oedepus were accomplisses and is oedepus the one that is blind? because i thought that it was Teiresias because when I was reading Oedepus solved the riddle and was saying how Teiresias couldnt slove it even with his “special talents” or maybe i got them mixed up but i thought that thats how it was

I’m saying that Creon and Oedipus were good friends, but he betrays Creon and says that Creon and Teiresias were the main problem just to get out of the intense conversation with Teiresias.
March 4, 2008 at 8:15 pm
So your saying once Oedepus got what he wanted he didn’t care about Creon anymore and so he was worried that Creon and Teiresias were going to side together and prove that Oedepus killed the old king?

Perhaps one of you can consult the book to see who is on the right track . . .
March 4, 2008 at 8:19 pm
The second part is true however he basically lied about Creon just to get Teiresias off his back. Creon was still Oedipus’s friend, but now he lies about it.
March 4, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Wait lies about what? LIes and says that Creon and him were not friends or what? And The reason all this started was because of the unsloved myseria on the murder of their past king right? and the one survivor went and all he said was that everyone was killed by a group of people (sorry I forgot what Mrs. G called them in class) and now teiresias thinks that it was oedepus just so he could rule the kingdom and be king. Is that right?
March 4, 2008 at 8:30 pm
No he doesn’t lie about them being friends in the BEGINING. He lies that he thinks Creon is in on the problem, so he FAKES that Creon is NO LONGER his friend and he BLAMES the whole issue on Creon.
March 4, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Why though? So that maybe Teiresias will start to blame creon instead of him?
March 4, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Yes. Oedipus wants to protect his “Kinglyness” and get Teiresias off his back.
March 4, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Teiresias claims truth to be her champion agianst Oedipus. Oedipus thinks Teiresias and/or Creon are plotting against him. I don’t completly understand the blindness except when Teiresias says ” you have taunted me with blindness! You have your sight, and yet you can not see where, nor with whom, you live, nor in what horror.” To me that means Oedipus is not paying attention to the world’s pain.

What was Teiresias’s claims to have as a champion against Oedipus? I dont understand that and also Im still confused on the whole blindness thing to. Is it just symbolizing how even though Teiresias is blind he still can see more then Oedepus can? (symbolically)
March 4, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Hi everyone if you are confused i believe that the 3 questions up there are things we should look for in the book. Also for the symbolic blindness when Teiresias keeps saying it’s you your the murderer I think that his how Oedipus is blind. He doesn’t see by becoming King they don’t remember the old one very much and Oedipus has taken over the life of the past king(his”father”) by marring his wife and his kingdom.

I read all of the comments and I think Rachel has the right idea. I didn’t think that Oedipus thought Creon and Teiresias were plotting but didn’t he just say that they were the main problem? I am not quite clear on that. Also about the blindness I think they are saying all though Teiresias is physically blind he can “See” what is really going on in the world and has a lot of knowledge while Oedipus can physically see everything and yet, he is completely blind to what is important and how the plague and hardships can be stopped. Please let me know if you disagree and what you think, it would be very helpful!

I think Tatun is right about the blindness. (yay tatum! thank you!)
March 4, 2008 at 11:02 pm
I am under the impression that Oedipus believes Creon and Teiresias are plotting against him because they want his crown. Teiresias is physically blind while Oedipis has the full use of his eyes. The irony is that despite his physical blindness Teiresias can “see” more in the realm of truth, therefore giving him better sight than Oedipus. Oedipus is mentally blind in the sense that he doesn’t see the truth that is right in front of him, and I believe that his huborous makes it hard for him to try and open his eyes to what Teiresias is telling him. Teiresias says that he has truth as champion over Oedipus.

I think the most ironic is how the blind man sees all. It was creon and teirias who are plotting against Oedipus right?
