the poem that I remember the most from class was about the invisible dogs that were chasing his grand father

  28. Jackson W Says:

    Chris:

When My Father Had La Viruela

    1946

We did not see out father
for months. My brothers told me he
had become a monster allergic to light.
Every night, I heard him leave

his walled-up room, where Mamá hid him
    from the government quarantined camps
where the infected died. Once, I sneaked

out of bed, watched him at the table
eat cold rice and a chicken slab. It never
left me, the scrape of his fork against
the plate, the long breaths he drew

between bites, the image of our father —
a thing hunched over his meal.
His hands, arms, and face swelled
with tight purple blisters. Before he finished,

I slipped back into bed between my sisters.
    Candlelight interrupted darkness
when he stopped in front of our room

and nudged the door open to look at us.
I closed my eyes, held my breath,
    ad listened to the clap
of his bare feet vanish into the walls.

  29. case Says:

  71. Mike A Says:

Guys imagine answering an entire class’ questions
    ITS HARD

  72. Chris P. Says:

How about we just start over? Forget all the other comments?

  73. marissa tivis Says:

Do you always base your poems off of real life expiriences?

  74. Juan M Says:

Sorry about the delay, everyone. I fixed the tech problem, and I am going to start answering questions from the top…thanks for your patience!

I will also stay on longer than planned to make sure I can answer you all.

  75. Darien.C Says:

lets just give juan some time to get his responses together

  76. Josh D Says:

    Sorry

  79. Jenn Gutierrez Says:

Okay, if you noticed . . . Juan has now fixed his computer difficulties and will begin trying to respond. Please do not post any more questions for a moment.

  80. Nick G. Says:

Are most of your poems about your family and/or culture, or do you like to write about different things?

  81. Juan M Says:

My favorite poems I have written vary. right now it’s a newer poem called Peddling the new world, which is an eight-page one about a young man who joins the spanish conquest of peru.

  82. graham s Says:

I have the same question as nick.

  83. Madison H. Says:

    Cool that sound really interesting

  84. Sam F. Says:

do you have a theme that you use most of the time in your poems?

  85. Juan M Says:

I see a lot of questions about inspiration, and I am inspired by a lot of things. I first started writing poems about my family and the stories they told me, I love writing about history, and I also write about things I see everyday. Poetry and writing is great that way because you can discover and learn about anything you want.

  86. Moorea Says:

Do you like to show more emotion in some poems more than others

  87. Elise L. Says:

Do you write mostly the same type of poetry or do you move around?

  88. Savannah C Says:

Where do you draw the inspiration for your poems from?

  89. Rachel S. Says:

Okay, Juan, it’s okay if you’re not reading this as soon as I send it out. I have computer problems of my own. So, when you do get this, I hope that I can be of more help to you, than of you to me.
First of all…poetry intrigues me. It’s difficult to be noticed for your passion, and the fact that you’ve accomplished so much inspires me. All I’m asking for is a couple of tips to manage the rough waters of the public eye.
Second…inspiration. Without that, us writers are completely in the dark. I mean, literally. There’s nothing I hate more than writer’s block. I’d like to know a little bit about how you aviod the urge to just stare at nothing.
Third…publicity. I’ve written some items of my own, that I’d like to get published (eventually) And that got me to thinking…what are the steps to publishing a book?
Fourth…Editing. Never one of my strong points, especially when it comes to my own work. If you ever-so-often edit your own work, how do you do it?

Now I understand that I have some pretty big questions, but these are things that I’d like to know, if I’m ever going to get a career in this field. You can take your time, after all, I am on the bottom of the comment list. But if you have the time to answer these questions, I’d really appreciate it.

  90. Chris P. Says:

Do you think about your whole poem, plan it out first, or just write and make it up as you go?

  91. Sam F. Says:

how often do you write poems

  92. Darien.C Says:

GUYS LET HIM CATCH UP HE HAS …20+..Alot of questions to do

  93. Josh D Says:

Can you give us an idea of what your newer poems are about?

  94. Jen G Says:

What do you like most about being a poet?

  95. Juan M Says:

When I was growing up, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer, but I always enjoyed writing and reading. I started cleaning my basement recently and came across old journals, which helped me realize the I have always been a writer. Writing is something that can be done for fun and when you are ready, you can take the next challenging step and try to get published.

  96. Greta S. Says:

Have you ever written a fantasy poem, or are most of your poems fiction and non-fiction?

  97. Savannah C Says:

how long did it take you to get published?

  98. Moorea Says:

Do you tend to write your poems on more personal experiences or other peoples experiences or other things?

  99. Rachel L Says:

What emotion do you usually write your poems about?

  100. Chris P. Says:

Alright, I’ll leave the rest with you guys. Juan, I have only heard one of your poems, but it sounds like the rest are very interesting, especially your new 8-page one, about Peru. Very cool!
    Bye.

  101. Jackson W Says:

Who are some of your favorite writers or poets? Have you incorporated any of their style into your own writing?

  102. Connor m. Says:

Have you ever writen a short story, book or just poems

  103. Juan M Says:

A few answers to the specific poem questions:

-my mom says the ghost dogs really did chase my grandfather, and he swore it was true.

-The viruela is smallpox, which my grandfather survived many years ago with the help of my curandera grandmother.

-The roads & shortcuts home is about my dad’s experience walking in the night in his home town Lajas.

-I really love ghost stories, but I don’t like to tell them only to scare people. I think they can speak about faith and the unique things about people in the past and present.

  104. Rachel S. Says:

Quck question: HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO ANSWER ALL OF THESE? IT WOULD TAKE ME ALL NIGHT!

  105. connor D. Says:

what is your favorite poem or piece of creative writing?

  106. Darien.C Says:

    very carefully racheal

  107. Juan M Says:

I don’t think I can answer everything, so I will do my best to catch up. I’m good, but I’m not that good. ;)

  108. EvAN Says:

That is very intrestering Mr. Morales

  109. graham s Says:

Do you plan out your peoms a head of time or do you just write them and make it up as you go along?

  110. Kelsey M. Says:

    Hi,
I was wondering if you always wanted to be a writer, or if it was a recent activity you became fond of?

  111. aLec Says:

What exactly is the point of your heritage I see a hispanic trend but my half my family is from mexico I’m not seeing very many mexican refrences

  112. Juan M Says:

Some of my favorite poets are pablo neruda, yusef komunyakaa, martin espada, eavan boland, and david mason to name a few.

  113. Sam F. Says:

how long does it take you to write a poem?

  114. Madison H. Says:

Juan thank you for spending this time talking to us and answering our questions.

  115. Rachaell Says:

What do you think is the most important thing about writing a poem?

  116. Juan M Says:

My heritage and culture are very important to me. I grew up in Colorado. My mother is from Ecuador and my father is from puerto rico. I lived in New mexico for a few years, so I some times write about NM and the southwest too.

  117. Jen G Says:

I think that is cool how you found out you were a writer all along. After hearing a few of your poems, I agree. keep up the great work Juan!

  118. Greta S. Says:

DO those poets have a certain style of writing that you find interesting?

  119. EvAN Says:

Ya thanks alot for having this dissucition with us Mr. Morales

  120. Connor m. Says:

Have you ever written a book before
    ??????

  121. Bill Says:

Where do you go to make up poems? Do you have like a special place?

  122. graham s Says:

I agree with Madison… It means a lot for you to take time out of your busy schedule.

  123. Jordan M. Says:

Wow it seems like we killed the poor guy with all these questions.. one more from me.. in you childhood what were some of the activities you took place in? did you write about them?

  124. Elise L. Says:

Thank you for talking with us.

  125. Sam F. Says:

thank you for answering all of our questions Mr. Morales.

  126. Rachel S. Says:

Okay, I put all of my main questions on, and I need some time for other homework. But before I go, nice reading your comments Juan. I totally understand the technical difficulties. My internet crashed…again, so I’m typing on my Mom’s computer. And Darien, my mane is spelled R-a-c-h-e-l, no extra A!

  127. Taryn Says:

Hello Mr. Maroles. I was wondering what made you want to become a poet?

  128. Juan M Says:

I also enjoy writing fiction and nonfiction too, but I still do not share them with a lot of people. I hope to some day publish them in the future.

Other than teaching and writing, I enjoy reading, spending time with my wife and cats, playing soccer, and working in the garden. It’s relaxing.

  129. David.C Says:

    yes Mr. Morales
thank you so much for spending your time with us.

  130. Bill Says:

    yes thank you very much

  131. Josh D Says:

What kind of inspiration did you get from growing up in Colorado?

  132. Connor m. Says:

Thank you Mr. Morales for spending your time with us
    bye

  133. Jackson W Says:

Yeah, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us, and for having the patience to deal with the constant influx of questions.

  134. graham s Says:

Thank you for sharing your time with us and answering our questions.

  135. Darien.C Says:

Mr.White would like you…If you run out of ideas for poems do you create some from the top of your head and if so seggest one.

  136. connor D. Says:

do you mainly focus on like the aspects of people and how they act or do you like to sit, say in you garden, and write about the world around you?

  137. Taryn Says:

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. it was very kind of you and I enjoyed reading your answers to our questions.

  138. marissa tivis Says:

Thank oyu very much Mr. Morales for sppeaking with us tonight…sorry we killed you with all these questions!!!

  139. Juan M Says:

I saw questiosn from some people including Connor abuot publishing and if I have a book. I published a book in 2006 called Friday and the year that followed, which has a lot of poems abuot my family and ghost stories and other interesting things I enjoyed writing about.

Publishing can be very challenging. I was sending out poems to magazines for about 3 years before I got my first publication. It take practice and persistence, but it will be rewarding if you can stick with it and keep revising!

  140. Rachel L Says:

Do you write most of your poems based on someone elses stories or youdr own?

  141. aLec Says:

Mr. Morales you have really given me a new understanding for creative writing and its interpretation thanks for your time
    bye

  142. Tyler R Says:

Connor asked before if Juan had written a book before. Since Juan might not have enough time, I recall hearing he has written two books.

  143. Josh D Says:

I think that they were wondering if you have written any books that are not all poems, like story books.

  144. marissa tivis Says:

One more thing, Where can i find some more of your poems?

  145. Elise L. Says:

it must have been hard to try for 3 years

  146. Rachaell Says:

do you ever write stories about things you dream about?

  147. Juan M Says:

I know you are studying music and poetry in your class, and there is a great link there. I love music and I used to be in a band when I was younger. It taught me a lot about rhythm and how to write something that can be read and performed in front of people. It also helped me realize another way writing can be fun.

when I write now, I listen to music all the time, which helps me concentrate. It also inspires me too. Music has the same power as poetry.

  148. Connor m. Says:

thank you for answering my question
we ask a lot of them

  149. EvAN Says:

Have you ever written a poem about some music that has inspired you?

  150. Juan M Says:

http://www.bedbugpress.com is where my book can be bought. You can also go to my website to read more poems published in other places.

some times I write dream poems too. I keep a dream journal next to my bed to, so I can write them before I forget.

  151. David.C Says:

Oh really? you were in band? what instroment did you play?

  152. Rachaell Says:

Mr. Morales, what is the hardest part of your career?

  153. Jordan M. Says:

thank you for your prospective Juan. Its been nice to see where you come from on your writing pieces but ive got to go for now. Have a good night

  154. connor D. Says:

i agree with you Juan about the fact that “Music has the same power as poetry” and i believe they go hand in had in inspiring the people that read and listen to them.

  155. Greta S. Says:

Do you think that music IS poetry and is interpreted the same way a poem might be?

  156. Josh D Says:

That is a really great idea to write about dreams you had.

  157. Elise L. Says:

this is kinda personal you don’t have to answer it but do the things you dream about make good poems

  158. Juan M Says:

Writing process was another thing I saw people ask about. I usually start by writing in my notebook by hand. Then I type out the poem and look for ways to make it shorter and clearer for readers.

Then, I look for places where it might be confusing for readers. When I write a poem, I spend hours adding, cutting, and moving parts of the poems around to see if I can get it right.

I also like to read the poems out loud to myself so I can hear the words.

  159. marissa tivis Says:

Thanks A LOT for answering all of our questions(i know that there was alot!)I enjoyed reading all of your answers!
    Have a good night!

  160. Jackson W Says:

I have to go. I may be back later, but if not: Thanks for your insight and for taking the time to chat with us! Have a good night everyone!

  161. Jen G Says:

Have there ever been inspired singers that wanted to turn one of your poems into a song?

  162. Juan M Says:

It depends on the music and poem, greta. It’s all about the purpose of the musician or writer. They might want to communicate an idea, entertain people, or make change. It’s up to the writer. :)

  163. Rachaell Says:

    yes

  164. EvAN Says:

Alright my brother has to do some homework and i have to leave now thanks a ton for your insite on poetry and have a good night.

  165. Madison H. Says:

Do you ever write about some of your favorite things like an animal, sport, or a wonderful/terrible memory

  166. Rachaell Says:

    I totally agree with that

  167. Juan M Says:

One of my friends in a band asked me about making a poem into songs, but it hasn’t happened yet. A lot of famous poets and writers do that.

  168. connor D. Says:

thank you for talking with us Mr. Morales i enjoyed hearing things from a man who has really taken poetry to hard and made a career for himself in creative writing

  169. Josh D Says:

I think you should strongly think about doing that. From the poems of yours I have read; i think they would sond great in song.

  170. Rachaell Says:

What is your favorite topic to write about? your family, your friends, dreams, things you wish have happened, or other?

  171. Eric O Says:

Have you always been a creative writer growing up?

  172. Eric O Says:

What has been the biggest influence in your life

  173. Darien.C Says:

thanks for coming Mr.Morales(to slam the poet with questions.) i might have to get off soon so my last question. Do you often just start thinking of something and then a poem just pops out at you?

  174. Juan M Says:

writing can be very challenging because you not only write about things you are happy about, but sometimes you have to write about tough emotions or situations. The important thing is to make it real to the reader so they can feel the same emotions and experience all the sensory elements of the moments being described.

  175. Juan M Says:

Darien, some poems come fast and unexpectedly. some poems are slow and take years to finish. I have one poem that I’ve been writing for 6 years now.

It take patience and you have to listen to the poem and writing for guidance.

  176. Greta S. Says:

Do you feel that a poem is still good if it does not express emotion?

  177. Darien.C Says:

    ..interesting

  178. Eric O Says:

Have you ever just gotten stuck when you are writing?

  179. Jen G Says:

Thank you for answering all of our questions Mr. Morales. I enjoyed reading about your history with poetry.

  180. Juan M Says:

I know a lot of people already left, but I just wanted to say thank you for having me here and for all the wonderful questions.

I also apologize again for the technology problems. :)

  181. Madison H. Says:

Thank you so so so much for spending so much time answering our questions. I enjoyed listing to all of inspiration. I had a blast listening. Bye

  182. Rachaell Says:

what do you think is the most important thing about writing?

  183. Eric O Says:

    Thank you.

  184. Greta S. Says:

6 years????!!!!!! How do you hold your attention to that one poem if you lose interest?

  185. Rachaell Says:

    Thank you so much! bye

  186. Elise L. Says:

after 6 years was the poem recognizable to the original form?

  187. Josh D Says:

    thank you

  189. Juan M Says:

I think poems need to express emotions in some form or fashion, Greta. You want the reader to feel what you feel.

eric, writer’s block is very common and it occurs all the time, but it goes away after awhile. it takes hard work and maybe even time away from the writing.

  190. Bill Says:

  192. Darien.C Says:

Thanks for coming Mr.Morales(again) do you possibly get influence from other peoms and incorperate some of them into a new poem

  193. David.C Says:

    wow.. 6 years?

  194. Juan M Says:

Rachaell, the most important thing to do with writing is to have fun but to take it seriously. One part of the writer must try exciting things and the other part has to be the editor to help it get communicated.

  195. Greta S. Says:

Have you ever written a poem with very mixed emotions?

  196. Juan M Says:

Definitely, Darien. All great writers are also avid readers. Read the classics, read the work being written today.

Yep, I’ve been working on the same poem for that long. It takes patience and lots of energy, but it’s worth it.

  197. Greta S. Says:

ALso, do you feel that anger is a good emotion to express in poems or a bad one, and how do you get your emotion across so strong?

  198. Josh D Says:

  203. Juan M Says:

Writing can communicate emotions strongly when you focus on describing the five senses, a good form to match the subject, and authentic details. Those will help you get a start.

    thanks again
